Kerala’s lush backwaters, spice-scented hills and vibrant traditions unfold gradually on this immersive journey through South India. Cochin’s spice trade history and Dutch Palace murals set the scene, alongside an evening of Kathakali dance and a traditional Sadya feast served on a banana leaf. The hill station of Munnar reveals rolling tea plantations and the story of the region’s tea trade at the Tata Tea Museum, while Madurai’s Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal and bustling Old City offer a dose of South Indian grandeur, explored in part by cycle rickshaw. In Thekkady, the Periyar Game Reserve provides the chance to spot wildlife by boat, before the journey reaches its most memorable stretch: a night aboard a traditional Kettuvallam houseboat, drifting along Kerala’s tranquil backwaters past stilted village houses and swaying palms. A visit to the local Kumbalangi village and a demonstration of traditional Kalaripayattu martial arts round out a tour that captures Kerala’s gentler, greener side of India beautifully.
