Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre

After a visit to see orangutans on Day 6 of the Wild Borneo tour, there's time to pop across the road to see the endearing honey bears.

Sadly their numbers are dwindling due to deforestation and poaching.

The results of these threats has caused young bears found living in unnatural conditions in Sabah, with no access to the outdoors.

As part of your visit you'll learn more about the efforts taken by the Centre to reverse the devastating effects of these activities.

Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world, and can only be found in the region of Southeast Asia. 

There are approximately 43 rescued sun bears residing at the centre, which offers large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to their needs. These spaces are designed to facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild.

THE IMPACT OF TOURISM

• Ticket sales help fund research of sun bears - one of the least researched bear species in the world.
• By opening up the centre to tourists, it raises awareness of the plight of the sun bear on an international stage.
• Outreach Programmes enable the Centre to educate schools and plantations on the need to preserve sun bears and their habitats. Knowledge of animal welfare and conservation is often under-developed in Malaysia and so the ability to reach rural communities cannot be underestimated.
